1864 Jany Fri 22nd - [along left margin: Simonton Williams Simington Downey Webster Mary] I went to Town A O Williams & Mr Simanton cam & stayed all night on there rode from Nashville I was Summoned to Nashville as a Witness to appears on Monday 25th agt Col Downey the Negro Col on trial. No verry particular news There was a few days ago some 12 or 15 of the Southern Soldiers captured on the bever damn in Hickman County Henry Webster Scott Mayes son & others Sent on to Johnson Island. (Mary in Town)

Sat 23rd I went to Town I was releaved from going to Nashville as a Witness agt Col Downing The Court will sit here that will try him on Monday next The weather still continues warm & clear The wind is from the South.

Sun 24th The weather is clear & warm No particular news The Soldiers Genl Dodds men are making trouble havock about & around Mount Pleasant taking Negroes Horses & Cattle &c

1864 Jany Mon 25) [in left margin: S K Smith died to day at Nashville] This morning Rd left in a hurray I went to Town A greate many people The Court Marshal will set in the morning to try Downing Majr Fitsgibbens arested Dodges men that were taking off the Cattle in the neighborhood of Mt Pleasant & braught them and there Cattle to Colombia but they were set at liberty & they took off the Cattle to Giles. I drew up a petition & it was signed by many Union men to get Saml K Smith out of imprisonment This day has been clear calm & warm like Summer Smith died to day we learn.
