Albany 23 September 1826

Sir

I received your letter of the 17th of July requesting information respecting the penitentiary system of this state and shall now endeavor to comply with your wishes

I transmit a book containing the Laws relative to our State Prisoners - An Account of the State Prison in the City of New York by one of the Inspectors in 1801 And a view of the New York State Prison in the City of New York in 1815 - which with the two reports herewith also sent, will convey all the information at present in my power relative to the objects of your enquiry

In order that you may have an accurate view of this communication, I must inform you that there are moree [sic] penitentiary houses belonging to this State - one in the City of New York - the second in the village of Auburn and the remaining one at Mount pleasant on the [margin?] of the Hudson River about thirty miles from that City: When the last, now in a train of construction by the Convicts, is finished, the first will be abandoned. I have not as yet received a report from the Keeper of the Auburn Prison but I expect it soon when it will be immediately forwarded.
