Honble Samuel Houston

Dr Sir

Our mutual friend Col. McClellan by last mail informed me that Hugh W Dunlap Esqr had determined to resign the app= =ointment of Attorney General for this district; and although this may appear rather premature, I tender mysef as a candidate for the appointment unassisted by personal interest or influential friends, my qu= alifications are better knon to you than I could de= scribe them and for respectabiity and standing I am indebted to such as followed me from Alab= =ama. Should you believe that by bestowing the appointment on me you will discharge that duty you owe to yourself and country the confidence reposed will not I hope be entirely misplaced and the favour will be greatfuly remembered
