will put it in the power of that body to do much service by offering proper reasons in support of the claim of the State, otherwise no doubt exists with us but the general Government will open a land office; and from our inattention probably avoid making the necessary provision for individual claims and thereby involve us in lasting difficulties.
With the utmost defference and respect we take the liberty to subscribe ourselves, your Excellencys' most devoted and very humble servants

To his Excellency Samuel Houston Governor in and over the State of Tennessee.
The Petition of your subscribers citizens of the county pf Maury in said State respectfully represents to your Excellency that at the December term of the circuit court for said county, A citizen Robert A Rankin for a violation of the penal law of the State, was sentenced to a fine of fifty dollars, and imprisonment for the term of four months; somewhat more than one half of which latter punishment he has already suffered.
Your Petitioners would further respectfully represent, that the said Robert A Rankin is a man in indigent circumstances with a Wife and child dependent solely on his personal exertions for support, and tha this present confinement renders it impossible for him either to contribute to their sustenance, or to provide means to answer the pecuniary part of his sentence. We therefore respectfully pray that your Excellency would consider the helpless & destitute situation of the family of the said Robert A, and remit to him the remainder of his adjudged period of imprisonment, and authorise the Jailor of said county of Maury to set him at liberty. And as in duty bound we shall ever pray &c.
