personaly [sic] appeared John Johnston before me James White a Justice of the peace for Knox Affs.d and made oath that on Wensday [sic] the 26th of June as I was in the Woods tracking a dear [sic] I had shot, I was fireed [sic] at by Indians I think fore [sic] in Mumber [sic] and Received a slight Wound in my side and was pursued some distanc [sic] by them after the guns fired

Knoxville 30th of June 1797

Sir/ you will in the Absence of the Governor for the protection of the froontiers [sic] Order out an Ensigns Command of fifteen Mounted Infantry to scour the Woods and Examine the trail of the Indians that Wounded Mr John Johnston on Wensday [sic] Evening last and if the[y] should be discovered or any Others in a hostile Manner treat them so as it will teach ^them that we are not to be imposed Upon with =out Resenting it and if possoble [sic] have them brought to Justice -

You will Order them for fifteen days if not sooner discharged limit your scout not to Cross the Tennessee River, and if on the tour the[y] should meet any Indians that Appears friendly treat them as such

Knoxville July 13th 1797

Dear Sir/

In your Absence from this place some thing has turned Up Contrary to our Expectations -

on the 28th of June the Indians fired at John Johnston Near to Sharps Station on Clinch and give him a Slite [sic] Wound on the side, as his deposision [sic] of that will make more fully Appear -

on which Information I ishued [sic] my order to Colo Sawyers to send out an Ensigns Command in serch [sic] of the Villians [sic] and if possoble [sic] have them brought to Justice, in Compliance with my order the Colo ordered Ensign Seags with 20 privits of Mounted Infantery [sic] out on tour not Exceeding fifteen days. this day Ensign Seags Retturned to
