and I belieuing that his chidren had the best right to engoy what property he left, I made it my business to get the negro woman and child into my possession, which I sold to a man who lives in some part of your Country, and sent the negros to him by a young man by the name of Alexander Mathews who at that time was hired by me to attend to my business in any respect that I might think proper- and I would further inform your ecellency that this business is likely to create great disturbance in this Country, and I am apprehensive that if great care is not taken that a party will be raised by McDonald in order to take up and punish Mathews according to the laws of this Country, as a Common thief - I would now wish your Ecellency to under stand, that as I before stated, this property gustly belonging to my wife and her sister who is now liuing with me, and Mathews being in my imploy, that I think him justefiyabl in what he done, he had no interest in the mother only to do what I wanted him to do as being hire ed by me- I wish your Eccellency to inqure into this business, and write to Col Meigs on the subgect, and giue me such assistance, and ordr such thing to be done, as your Eccellency, and Col Meigs may think proper, from the Confidence which I haue in your freindship, and protection I shall expect to hear from you as soon as possible - I remain your Sincere friend &c
