Tazewell (Ten) 19th June 1828.

Sir,

I take the liberty of addressing you a few lines in relation to the case of Daniel Allen, who was convicted, some time ago, of Manslaughter in the circuit court of Greene and on whose behalf our application will be made to your Excellency for a pardon.

I was present and heard Allen's trial, and have a knowledge of all the circumstances connected with that unhappy affair; and with such knowledge, believe I might well say, that very few if any, ever had a better founded claim to a pardon than has Daniel Allen — indeed I cannot well conceive a fitter case for the excercise of that merciful prerogation with which you are entrusted. And of this oppinion [sic] are all who have impartially considered the circumstances of the case - they believe his own life was in jeopardythat he acted in obedience to a law of his natureand just as they, in all probability, would have acted under similar circumstances.

Mr. Allen occupies an eminent stand in the estimation of all who know him, and I am well assured, that no act of your administration could afford more
