Clarksville Oct 2d. 1848
Dear Governor.
There is a vacancy in the place of Tobacco Inspection in Clarksville occ :asioned by the resignation of Mr. A.D. Witherspoon where [terms?] express on the 1st January next. The County Court intended to Elect a successor today, but refer looking in to the law of 1842. I find hte power to fill vacancies is [confined?] on the Gover nor of hte State. My old friend Cal C. Crusman is a candidate for the office & desires to be afforated [sic] to fill the vacancy. He has been engaged for three years in the Tobacco business & is a good judge of the article & has high character for firmness & fairness in all business transactions I do not doubt he will discharge the duties of the place with perfe t impartiality ability & fairness. I shall [?] a great per sonal favour if you can [?] confer upon him the office - I know he will give [?] at satisfaction & I feel will [assued?] he [would?] [there?] been elected today, if the county court had proposed the power to slash fill the vacancy the Tobacco business fill requires the office to be filled immediately & I hope will confer it on Cal Crusman All is going on well for old [Zack?]
