Louisville Novr 8th 1849

To The Governor of Tennessee: Dear Sir:

I have been appointed a Commissioner of deeds &c for the following states by the Governors of them - Pennsylvania Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, & Missouri. I find that the value to the public of the office of Commissioner depends upon the publicity which is givent o the appointment of the officer. But it is obvious that very little pains will be taken by the officer to make his appointment known, unless the emoluments are adequate to furnish an [inducement?] And,a lhtough a commission held under a single state is attended with very limited com-pensation, a number of commissions held under a variety of states will operate as a stimulus to make the office of commissioner useful to the public. You will very much oblige the undersigned to appoint him a commissioner of the State of Tennessee for & within the state of Kentucky. The [?] of the undersigned in Louisville Kentucky. I would furnish abundant testimony of fitness for the office but the [facility?] of getting testimonials for an office, even when undersigned, is so great, that I forbera troubling your Excellency with such evidence.

Yours &c Caleb W. Logan
