Sept 6-7 182

of bacon a little sugar & a little rice constituted a ration now a days. About 11 oclock we were ready to lie down. Pretty hard fare I believe.

Saturday, Sept. 6. The old story this morning. At three oclock we had to get up. At daybreak fall in & then wait. Our destination we do know nothing as yet a good think we are going to Nashville direct but the Lord only knows what is before us. About 10 oclock a Tele. Dispatch was read to us. That Gen. Smith had a brilliant victorie at Richmond Ky. On gen. killed, on wounded, & 3000 prisoners. About noon we reached a little Village called Spencer The town was almost deserted. The Fed. had not been here in a fortnight & we had almost a continual discent from the Mountain, which is 24 miles from here to base. At dusk we crossed the dry bed of the Tenne Fork river on the road to Sparta were we [?]
