I am just now very sad over the sudden death of my dear friend, Fannie Paul at Carlsbad (Mr Drexel's daughter) who was here a month ago, well and happy. She leaves three little children - died of typoid [sic] fever. Mr Drexel who is at Carlsbad, most distressed, leaves for America today with her body - her husband and children. She had great health and all to make her happy in this life.

Please pardon this long letter, dear Mrs Stanford, and accept our affectionate regards for you and the Senator, in which our children

My very dear Mrs Stanford. I have just received a letter from Fred inclosing [sic] your note, saying how ill you have been and still are.

I knew you were ill, for I have been dreaming and dreaming
