My dear Mrs Stanford:-
I cannot adequately express to you my deep sorrow at your great loss. Knowing as I personally did how good a man Senator Stanford was and what a kind heart he had, his death is a national calamity, and will be felt by the general poor and needy as deeply as by his personal friends. The last time I saw him we had a nice long chat about horses, and it was of great interest to me to listen to him, he was full of information and ideas upon the subject, and I was very gld [sic] to learn from him. I assure you that you have many friends whose hearts go out to you at this hour. Believe me my dear Mrs Stanford
Your sincere young friend
