though he takes notice of two that were seen in the Bosphorus from morning till evening and [?] has related the times when such phenomenon were observed at Rome, Gassendi says that 1635 1636 he often saw one mock sun, two were observed by Mon De la Hire in 1789 and the same number by Cassini in 1693, Mr. Grey in 1700 and one by Halley in 1702. But the most celebrated appearance of this kind was seen at Rome by Scheiner by Muschenbrock at Utrech and by Hevelius at Sedan. By the two former four mock suns were observed, and by the latter seven.

Paraselena, or mock moons have been seen accompanied with tails and coloured circles like those that accompany the pashellia, an account of several and a particular description of a fine appearance of this kind may be seen in Muschenbrock - The Roman phenomenon observed by Scheiner is famous on account of its having been the first appearance of the kind that engages the attention of Philosophers.

Various hypotheses have been framed by Philosophers to account for this phenomenon particularly by M Marlotte Descartes and Huygens - Now of them [strikethrough] have [/strikethrough] however are satisfactory, but readers who wish to become acquainted with them may consult Huygens dissertation on this subject in Smiths Optics Book II. chap II and Dr. Faistley's History of Vision.
