Sunday November 20, 1921

A cloudy day & some rain. We all was at home until after dinner. Josie and I got dinner. I killed and dressed two chickens and fried them. Josie baked some pies. I churned this evening. Jim went to see John Hutchersons hogs. Met up with Mr Jess[?] & Willie Hutcherson and Will Alen and spent the evening walking and talking. Henry B went to Dr Owens. He rode Jake, Bens horse. The [?] broke and Henry fell off. It did not hurt him. Ben & Josie, Edna & Franklin and Mabel and I went to Marvins. They were all well. One of the turkeys is sick and I expect it will die.

A clear cold day. Ben went to Marvin's this morning. This evening we all went up there. Maybel cried so that they brought her home. I thin k she was sick. Aubrey Brumfield come and played with Henry all day. Reese & Paul come with him here. They went home for dinner. Josie made pies. I cooked a chicken for dinner. We did not eat supper. 8 oclock

A good day. Ben & Jim cut wood in the woods. Ben made a crate this evening for the calf. I caught some hens & put them up. Hope that they can go to Gretna tomorrow. Josie got dinner and baked some pies for the children to take to school. Nettie Blair & Hellen Brumfield come [?] school there. I am glad to have them. I got a letter from John this evening. I got a pair of shoes by mail.

Sunday, February 22, 1920

A rainy day. All staid a bout home. The children is complaining but not seriously I hope. Josie made pies for dinner. We had no company. I have not seen any one passing the road today. Have not heard from the sick folks to day. I would be glad to know that every one is better off. Oh it is such a distressing time. Hope it will be better soon.

Saturday, February 28, 1920

A good day. Ben went to George Blairs and worked on his engine some then went to Renan. Jim got in a lot of wood and went to Renan. Josie washed some this morning. Killed & dressed a hen this evening and baked some pies. I done very little as usual. I finished a quilt the last that I expect to make this spring or ever maybe. I hope that the children are better off and will stay so for a while any way.

A good day. Ben went to Mag Brumfields to a cutting match. Jim cleared up the garden nearest [?] the potatoes. Henry went to Mags this evening & to Lees. I went to Johnson Reynolds this evening. Found them all well. Josie baked some pies this evening. Charles Harvey come & brought a sack of ship stuff home. Jim & Ben has gone to Strait Stone tonight.

A good day. Ben and faimily went to Mr Jim Powers. Mrs Car and Mr Mealer [?] was there. Jim and I went to Marvins. Carrie had a nice dinner. Roast chicken and cocoanut pies. Jim & Marvin rambled a round the plantation all day.

A beautiful day. Ben and family went to Rob Hubbards. They brought back a nice mess of fish. We cooked them tonight. I went to Marvins and eat dinner. Carrie had fried chicken, the first that she had this spring. She had cherrie pies. I did enjoy my dinner.

Thursday, May 13, 1920

A cloudy day. No rain. The boys worked on tobacco land all day. We had a shower last night. It was badly needed. Josie ironed most of the morning. She made pies for dinner. This evening Marvin carried Josie and three children and Carrie and three children to the school house. Dr. Caton and his assistants were there to exzamine the children. There was a crowd to be examined.

Sunday, June 6, 1920

A beautiful day. Cool for June. We all was at home for dinner. We had peas and chicken and chocolate pies. All of us went to Marvins this evening. We went to see the new road. Richard Wooding & family passed on his car. He ask some of us to ride. Josie and the baby and Franklin rode home. I was so glad that she could ride as she had to carrie the baby. 9 15 oclock

Cloudy and some rain. We all have bin at home all day. We had a surprise. Billie and Nanie Bennett and Allen and Elsie Boling come. I was glad that they come. Hope that they got home O K. Would like to know. I would of liked to had things better but am glad things were no worse. Carrie baked some pies for me. I was very glad of them.

A good day and very warm. To night we have a hard rain. Jim & Ben topped tobacco nearly all day. Late this evening Ben & Josie and three children went to Jim Powers. Said they would come home tonight but they wont on acount of rain. Josie washed some this morning & got dinner. Corn, butter beans, potato, baked pies. Marvin let Rees take me to White Falls. I caught 34 fish. I eat dinner at Carries. Eva is sick.

A good day. Ben & Josie and children got home about dark. Jim got huckle berries enough to make three pies. I made them. I went to Marvins a while this evening. Kate Harvey was there. Reese carried her home. Carrie and all the children and I went with her. Jim has staid around home all day. Ben & family and Mrs Car & Mrs Power went to Mr Role Hubards to day. 9 oclock

A good day. It did not rain today here. It rained in sight. The men folks worked on their tobacco. Josie got dinner. She cooked snaps and butter beans. Reese carried me to Johnson Reynols to get some peaches. I got enough to put up two gallons. We had peaches and cream for dinner. Josie gathered some beans. I helped a little. I went to the sweet potato patch and got a few potatoes. I intend makein pies. 8:30 oclock

A cloudy day and rain this evening. The men pulled leaves. Josie got dinner & caned tomatoes. I made some jellie. Josie ironed some. Earl Bennett come over here a while. He is at George Blairs tonight. I killed two chickens to cook in the morning. Josie made some nice pies. I intend going to Richmond to morrow if nothing happens to hinder. 8 oclock

A beautiful day. Jim & Ben stripped and moved tobacco all day. Today was Ednas birth day. She talked about it a great many times. Mrs Car gave her some money. Aunt Carrie gave her a nice piece of rbbon and a cake. I killed a chicken and made pies. Ben did not hear from Josie to day. He is troubled about not hearing. The baby has bin better to day than usual. Carrie come this evening and bathed the baby. I am so glad that she will attend to her.

A good morning. Rain this evening very hard. The branch was out of its banks. Ben went to the Cork Mill this evening. He got his wheat ground. Got home at dark. Henry and Franklin went with him. Thelma went from here this evening and walked through the mud. I went to the snap [pa.els] and got some snaps and some sweet potatoes. Think I will make some pies in the morning. Thelma ironed some this morning.

A good day. We all staid at home until twelve. Hugh & [?]& Ernest Brumfield come to see Henry there. Dave Booker come he was on a car. They all got on it and went to Lees. I got dinner. I cooked snaps and chicken baked sweet potatoes made pies. The first potatoes of this season. No one come to see us today. [I] would of bin glad for some one to come. This is a plentiful year of vegetables and fruit I have had some thing to cook that is nice most evry day. I want to be thankful.

A very bad day. We all staid at home all day. Nellie & I got dinner. Nel baked potato pies. I cooked cabbage & back bones. Nellie churned. I fixed up the butter. Johnson come here a while. He was talkeing a bout fixing for Xmas. I done want to fix much but will do the best I can. Jim went to John Hubbards he said to see about getting a goat. He said it was dead. I did not want it here any way.

A cloudy dreary day but no falling weather. Jim stayed a round home most of the day. Ben moved in a hand. John Ward. He was until dark getting home. Then he carried Fanny Power and the children to the school house to a play. Nellie baked two cakes & Fanny one and made some pies. Fanny ironed some/ The cloths was not dry eneough to iron good. I mended Edna's coat this morning & churned and fixed up the butter this evening. Josie has suffered bad today. I had a letter from Carrie today. It is very colde tonight too.

A good day. We all staid at home except Henry. He went to Sunday School and to Mr. Jim Powers. Nellie went to Johnsons. This evening Nellie made pies for dinner. Today she bathed the children and dressed them. I milked and churned and helped about dinner some.

A good day. Ben sent John Ward to Renan this morning for a matress and shavings. Jim cleaned up a brier patch and then went to John Hutchersons to a barn raising. This morning Nellie got dinner. She made the children some pies. I went to see [Mildred Ferguson?]. She is sick. Julia is worried a most to death about her. I come by Mr. Bookers and bought a few potatoes for the children. Well Ben has come to go to bed.

A rainy day very disagreable day. We was all at home at dinner. Henry went to Johnson Reynolds. Mildred Ferguson is seriously sick. Nellie got dinner. She baked potato pies that pleased the children. Ben helped Edna fix her beads. Painted them for her. Edna fed the calf for me. Mable is sitting up in the bed talking. She has a bunch of violets. I have stayed with the children in the dining room. Ben put papers under his mattress this evening.

Tuesday, April 24, 1923

A good day. The men worked on their tobacco land hauling manure and plowing. The children went to school. Mabel went with them to the field twice. I have bin busy most of the day. I baked sweet potatoe pies for dinner. Mrs. Ruth Booker come to see me today. I was glad that she come. I had thought maybe because I am old and am not fashionable that none of the would come. I heard to day that Marvin Smith was sick and several of the children was sick. I am asleep.

Sunday. A rainy morning. Ben worked on Henrys clown suit some. Henry and Edna went to Strait Stone to Sunday school but they did not have any school it rained so much. The children did not get wet much. This evening Johnson Reynols come and Lee and Grace Brumfield. I was glad to see them. I got dinner and supper. I cooked a chicken and baked pies. I bathed little Mabel and dressed her. Henry went to Johnsons to see Floid. He thinks they found a hawk nest. Preacher [Dabney?] was buried to day.

A good day. They planted corn. Norman Owen was here this morning. I was fring pies for dinner when Carrie walked in I was so glad. Marvin and the children looks bad. They have not got over the measles. Eva ear[?] is in a bad shape. I do hope that they will get well soon. Hope they got home o.k. The children went to school. Henry went with George Blain and Mr. Mayhew. I hope he wont get hurt. Jim planted some things in the garden.

A good day. The men worked on their tobacco land most of the day. Oh how I wist we could have rain. I have felt bad all day. Guess walking up to Renan had something to do with my bad feelings. I have bin busy all day. Cleaned up the chickens coop. I gathered a few strawberries today. The first that has ripened this spring. Lelia Ward sent me some salit for dinner. I fried some pies this morning. Ben is very much comnplaining tonight. He has a very bad colde. Jim had a letter from Nellie today.

A good day. Ben finished cutting wheat this morning. This evening they fixed some tobacco land. Jim plowed some sweet potatoes. I wanted to go to the river but did not go. I mended overalls yesterday and to day. Lelia Ward sent the clothes home done up nice. I am glad of that much help. We had new Irish potatoes and last years butter beans and apple pies. I killed two chickens for dinner tomorrow. I made a mess of my book. Nothing but carelessness. I am ashamed of it but cant help it now.

A very hot day. We need rain so bad. The men worked tobacco all day. Ben has gone with Henry seining to night. I am glad that Ben went. Mr. John Smith and wife come here this morning. They did not stay long. They went to Marvins from here. They offered to take me but I could not go. I baked berrie pies and cooke cabbag and potatoe and beans this evening. I have done almost nothing. There is lots of sweeping that should be done. Kate Hubbard and Janie Brumfield and Floid R passed here. Went to Alleen Emersons for peaches.

A good day. Ben staid at Lees all day. Henry went up there last night. Edna and Franklin went up there this evening. They went with Reese and Paul Smith. They brought Nellie from Gretna home. Mr. [Sprat?] and his wife and wife's sister come to see Evylin this evening. I went to see Mollie this evening. They had come from Piney Grove. They had not eat dinner. Posey and family and Clack and family was there. Mollie had a good dinner. Snaps and beef and chicken pies and cake. One of the best that I ever did taste. Posie brought me home on his Red Bird car. It did ride fine.
