A clear colde day. Ben commenced on a room for Owen to day. Josie went to the store and bough some things for Edna this evening.

The children started to school to day. Miss Sneed came to day to be [scratched out "principle"] at Harmony Grove.

Miss Janie Gravley stopped in here this evening.

Ben and Josie is at the barn working on tobacco to night. Marvin went to Gretna today and solde tobacco for a good price. Ben and Josie and Marvin has just come from the barn.

Mostly cloudy today Had a thunder storm late. Ben and Owen shucked corn nearly all day. Josie and I stripped tobacco the Owen children helped.

Janie Gravley and Effie Brumfield are here to night I am glad to have them.

Had a letter from Thelma B to day. I am so anxious to hear from Jim Brumfield.

There is so much sickness I am a fraid he is sick.

Henry and Edna went to school to day. I am a shamed to make so many mistakes.

Friday, November 22, 1918

Colde and cloudy.

Ben went to Gretna with a load of tobacco for Paul and him self and a little for Irvin Harvey. It all sold reasonably well. Josie sewed. I got a snack for dinner.

This evening I mended my sweater. Miss Janie and Mrs Gravley come in a few minutes on their way from school. Mr Layne come this morning to try to get his calf home. He could not manage him and he is here yet. Ben got home from Gretna about sundown.

I watered and fed some of the hogs be fore he got home.

A clear colde day.

Ben killed a beef this morning. Mr Owen helped him. They both cut wood at Mags this evening. Josie washed some this evening. I stewed pumpkins to day.

I went to Carries this evening. I did not stay but a few minutes.

Janie Gravley and Effie Brumfield come here to night.

Mr Owen and Luke come in a few minutes. Mr Owen played the fiddle a little while. Ben and Josie and Janie and Effie are playing cards now.

A good day.

Ben and Josie and Mrs Carr went to Chatham. I kept Franklin and got dinner.

Josie went up to Marvins and staid with Carries children while Marvin and Carrie went to Strait Stone and tonight Ben and Josie and Janie Gravley has gone to the school house at Strait Stone to a Community League meeting. Miss Angle passed here to day on her way to the Mountain School House.

A good day. Ben sawed some wood for Marvin. Broke his saw and could not finish.

Josie done a big washing. I got dinner. Mrs Carr heard to day that Max Carr is at Mr Powers to night and will leave tomorrow morning.

I went to Carries this evening. Janie Gravley is here tonight.

Heard that Effie Brumfield went from school sick today. Hope she may be well by tomorrow.

Thursday, November 28, 1918

A very rainy day. Miss Janie and the children went to school. Ben has bin complaining all day. He hitched the horses to the waggon and started to meet the children met them nearly at home.

Virginia Harvey come with Janie home.

Mrs Carr has bin sick all day. Josie got supper . She cooked a chicken and made cocoanut pies. They were fine. I have set by the fire more than common to day and have enjoyed it. I have had a very good fire tonight for which I am glad.

This is the night of Thanks Giving day.

A good day. Ben and Owen worked on Owens house until twelve then Owen and Ben and Josie went to the school house. They had a play of some sort over there.

Mrs Carr and I staid here with Franklin. John is here tonight Ben went to meet him. He had to go as far as Jim Rolans. The[y] did not get home until after ten.

I heard today that Denia Blair is sick. I do hope that she will soon be well.

Janie Gravley has gone home to night. Mrs Gravley come for her.

A colde windy day. Ben carried a load of wood to the school house this morning and then helped shuck corn at Kates. They got done by twelve.

This evening Ben and Josie and Marvin went to Altavista.

Josie washed this morning. I kept Franklin all day. I got a letter from Effie Brumfield today and got Fanny and Julia Emersons picture.

Tonight Doris Brumfield and Christine Reynolds is here. They come with the children from school. Miss Janie Gravley did not teach to day.

I am not well tonight. Hope I may feel better by morning.

Saturday, December 7, 1918

A cloudy day. Ben worked on Owens house. It has bin a busy day with Josie and I. Josie ironed most all day.

I went down to the cook room 15 to four oclock made a fire washed the supper dishes then got breakfast. Called the rest of them then we eat. After breakfast I cut up two pumpkins and put them on to cook then put on some meat to cook fed two calves and brought a bucket of water then milked two cows and sloped the pigs put on a liver and face to make scrappel then churned. Josie made bread and coffee for dinner. I washed up a lot of things and took up the meat for dinner then eat dinner. Took up the pumpkins and meat for scrapple and made the scrappel. Janie Gravley and Lucius Muriel Gravley and Effie Brumfield stopped here a few minutes on their way home from Danville. Well I have not room for any more.

A good day warm for the time of year. Ben worked on Owens house. I went up to Owens this morning a few minutes.

I boiled the last of our beef today. Josie fried dougnuts. We heard that Kate Harvey is sick. I do hope that she may not be sick long.

Think now that I will go to Danville to morrow with Mollie Reynolds.

Ben and Josie and Miss Janie Gravley has all gone to Cedar Forest tonight to get things for a fruit cake.

A cloudy day but no rain. Ben worked on Owens house. Josie staid at home and worked all day.

Ben carried me to Johnson Reynolds be fore light this morning. I went with them to Danville. We was at Spring Garden be fore it was light good. We saw lots of pretty things. I did not by much. Eat supper at Mollies and enjoyed it. The boys Robert and Floyd got them a bycicle to day.

I am at home to night O K. Miss Janie is here to night. I enjoy having her.

Josie carried Miss Janie and Henry to school this morning. She said she liked to of froze be fore she got home. Ben went after them this evening. Miss Angle is spending the night here tonight.

Kate Harvey is sick and I am so troubled a bout her think I will go and see her tomorrow if I am well enough.

Ben worked on Owens house. Miss Angle and Miss Janie went from here to school this morning.

Josie sewed some. I knit. I got some yarn from Richmond.

Josie went to Carries this evening did not stay long. Heard to day that Kate was feeling some better.

A cloudy day. Ben has bin complaining all day.

Mr Owen and Marvin and William Gilbert killed two hogs for Ben this evening.

Josie got dinner. I cleaned up the smoke house then I took he fat off the intrils and cleaned the feet of the hogs.

Ben carried Miss Janie home and got Mr Jim Emersons tining tools. He wants to cover Owens house soon.

Henry and Edna went to school to day. Floyd Reynolds come by here this evening and got a few eggs. He was on his bycicle. I feel like I know he broke them.

A good day. Ben & Jim is at the barn. They ground apples to day to make cider. This evening Ben went to Cedar Forest to see some parties a bout a school house. Henry and Edna and I went two.

While we were gone Kate Harvey come. Also Janie Gravely & Evylin Edmons. I would of bin glad to see them. Mollie Reynolds come a little while before I went a way from home.

Josie got dinner. I washed the dishes after dinner.

I have just finished working button holes in Roy Smiths pants.

A cloudy day. Jim & Ben plowed all day. Owen went to Long Island. Carried his calf.

Bessie Callands (col) come here this morning to work. I hope she may stay and be some help to us.

Josie got the dinner.

I washed a little this evening.

I went to Johnson Reynolds. While I was gone Miss Smith and Miss Carter and Janey Gravely stopped to see Josie and the baby. I would liked to have seen them but they did not come to see me.

Tonight Ben & Willie Mayhew has gone hunting.

A cloudy day and some rain and sleet this morning.

I went to Marvins and helped Carrie a bout her hog killing. I dried up the lard. We got through by night. Nellie & Josie stayed at home and kept house.

Josie made some mince meat.

Ben & Jim could not do much any way.

Jim is very much complaining to night. Jany Graveley gave a dance tonight. None of our folks went.

A good day. Ben & family and Thelma & Mary went to Jim Powers and spent the day. Mrs Car gave them several new presents.

I staid at home all day. Swept the floors, fed the pigs, milked the cows, got in wood, fixed a little custard, and eat by myself.

I guess I would of went to some of their homes but thought I might be in the way. They might be going some where and I would be a bother. Be sides I did not feel like walkin far.

Miss Janie Gravely & Mr Aubra Hendricks come here tonight to see Thelma & Mary. They were gone to Lee Brumfields. Jack Harvey come after them.

A good day. Ben helped rais a barn at George Blairs. Jim worked at home. Josie washed. She has had the tooth ache all day. I staid with the baby. This evening I went to Carries a little while. Tonight Janie Gravely & Hellen Brumfield and Franny Emerson are here to stay all night. Orval Gravely & Charley Harvey and Miss Smith & Miss Carter will stay until bed time. I will be glad when they brake up.

A good day. Jim and Marvin & Reese went to Gretna and carried the calves. Ben & Henry plowed and sowed peas. Mr Owen plowed in his corn. Josie and got dinner. Carrie and the children come down here. Janie & Aubra Brumfield come this evening. I went to Johnson Reynolds. Johnson come and got a cat and 3 kittens. We got a barrel of flour to day. 9 30 oclock

A good day but windy. We all staid at home until after dinner except Edna. She went to Sunday School with Marvin. I went with Marvin and Carrie to Gretna to meet Jim. Mr Emet and Dr Will Smith and their wives come to Marvins a few minutes this evening. Doris & Janie and Christenia Rey nolds come and staid a while this evening 9 oclock

A clear windy day. Rain last night. Jim has staid at home all day. He looked for Nellie & Evylin. They did not come. Ben went for Mrs Car this evening. I am glad that she come with him back. Josie thought of going with him but Carrie came and she did not go. Grace Brumfield & Kate Harvey come. We were glad to have them. Glades and Doris and Janie Brumfield & Christenia Reynols come a while. Marvin and family went to church and then Carrie & the little ones come to see us.

A colde cloudy day. Ben worked on the garden. Jim helped Johnson on his plant bed until twelve. He come home to dinner. This evening Ben went to Gretna. Jim and I went with him. Jim went to Chatham. I done some shopping. Ben bought some flour. We got home about night. Henry and Professer Gambol went to the Sulpher Strings. Hugh come here. Henry & Hugh went down the branch fishing. Did not catch any thing. Miss Janie Gravely come to see Josie this evening. We were very glad that she come. I did want to go and see Carrie this evening.

A good day. We all staid at home. Mr. Trent & I got dinner. We cooked snaps & [potatos?] and beets friend chickens made apple dumplings Mrs. Anderson & Denia Blair come to see Josie. Miss Janie and Anna Hubbard and Rob & Ella and Mr. Sam all come to see Josie. Mrs. Lewis sent her some nice peaches. Miss Anna brought her a box of tomatoes & some light bread. Charley Harvey brought Carrie here a few minutes. I was so glad she come. I had thought of her all day.

A good day. The boys plowed half the day. Ben & Henry helped thrash wheat at Johnson [Reynolds?]. Mollie came to see Josie this evening. [Kate?] HUbbard for her in the car. Mrs Booker come for a whil [Nellie?] sent [?] a dress today. Janie [?] come ion a few minutes this morning. She was on her way from Lynchburg. Mrs. Trent & I got dinner. Mrs. Trent churned. Josie had [bine?] up a little today. Heard from my brother They though he was [some?] better. I hope he may get well.

A good day. The men cut corn. The children went to school. I got dinner & churned. Nellie milked and caned some apples & made jellie. Daisy & Queen both (col[oured)] washed. Mrs Dr Owen come to see Josie a while this evening. Josie has bin lead off all day. Fanny Power come back tonight. Miss Janie Gravely come with her. She did not stay but a few minutes. Mabel has bin good all day today. I broke my glasses to day. A Mrs Layne come here begging today.

A good day. Ben disked. He had Mr Edmons disk. Jim come home this evening. I got dinner. Daisy col girl washed some this morning. Mr Rufus Car & family come to see Josie today. Kate Harvey & Julia Fergerson come this evening. Heard to day that John & Edwin started to Washington today. Miss Janie Gravely & her friend come in a few minutes this evening. Fanny Power went with them home. They expect company there tonight. Heard tonight that Ray Booker is sick. He has diphtheria. I hope he may soon be well.

A very hot day. We need rain so bad. The men worked tobacco all day. Ben has gone with Henry seining to night. I am glad that Ben went. Mr. John Smith and wife come here this morning. They did not stay long. They went to Marvins from here. They offered to take me but I could not go. I baked berrie pies and cooke cabbag and potatoe and beans this evening. I have done almost nothing. There is lots of sweeping that should be done. Kate Hubbard and Janie Brumfield and Floid R passed here. Went to Alleen Emersons for peaches.
