Saturday, April 26th[1986] Slept till 7; gwyn already up. Continued Parkman IV. Repairman from Holiday Grills replaced damaged parts of backyard grill: $12545 .Drove to Lipsey’s; got rainbow trout filets for dinner. Floured them lightly, sautéed them in peanut oil then Gwyn cooked broccoli potatoes; bottle of Fumé blanc. good, all round.

Sunday, April 27th[1986] Continued Parkman to within a hundred pages of its end; then broke off + read New Yorker, leavingfinish for tomorrow.Sorry to say that foot is worse instead of better these past few days. I must go back to Campbell Clinic about it.

Monday, April 28th[1986] Called Campbell Clinic about ailing foot; made appointment with Dr. Carnesala for 3 p.m. tomorrow. Received $900 from Rosen; Burns Bros. payment.Finished Parkman’s The Old Regime in Canada, then began the following Volume V, Count Frontenac in New France Under Louis XIV , a much livelier narrative I believe.

Campbell Clinic,3 p.m. Dr. Carnesala Tuesday, April 29th[1986] Still with Parkman. In afternoon drove to Campbell Clinic, kept appointment with Dr. Carnesala, who told me to keep up as I have been; not to go beyond limited pain, but to wiggle my toes + even try to resume walking if it doesn’t hurt too much. Will do.En route, deposited the Burnses $900.

Botherations; woman came by for me to autograph Civil War Vol. I; Shelton A/C sercived + turned on air-conditioning. I turned off furnace pilot light—the usual May day ritual.Weight, 162. I’d feared it might be more, from lack of exercise. Drove to Seessel’s, got a longbone sirloin.
