August 21st, 1986
Boiler work continued; nearing completion. Began the Adams History. Looks good. Air conditioning repairman finally arrived; trouble (dirt-clogged coil, improper drainage) too big for him to handle alone; returns tomorrow. Outrageous oversight, all these years of annual inspections and start-ups. Johnny and Debbie came to dinner - steak and mushrooms vegetables, plus fruit and sour cream dessert; bottle of Brandy. [Clendeunm?] workers bled air from all the radiators. All that's left is installation of new thermostat and a final testing. Net cost, as agreed: $4,433. Walked 1 1/2; Beethoven's Qt. 6.

Friday, August 22nd[1986] Clendennin completed work on new furnaces + boiler; all ready to go when cold weather comes. Shelton airconditioning crew didn’t show up; bad scene all round.Gwyn went with Mary Ann on a clothes + shoe sight-seeing expedition, determined to spend no money.I continued Adams History, liking it better as it goes along. From undoubtedly chapters 1-6, upto Jefferson’s inauguration. Walked 2.5, again in forty-minutes; played Sibelius Sym. 2.

Saturday, August 23rd[1986] Slept till almost 8; cereal breakfast. Continued Adams; Jefferson’s first year. Walked 2.5, same fast clip; played more Sibelius, symphonies 3 + 6.

Sunday, August 24th[1986] Up at 6:30 for a lazy Sunday.Lucy Fisher’s for poolside hamburgers.Home again, finished Vol. I of Administration of Jefferson.Wroteto Louis Rubin thanking him for the Mozart cassettes, + to Paul Carmignani congratulating him on winning his dissertation on my work.Skipped walk because of midday outing. Johnny + Debbie came by with their puppy Jake. He + Booker got along well. Johnny showed me how to rig the VCR for playing rented video cassettes.

Monday, August 25th[1986] Shelton air-conditioning people still didn’t show.I must call + jog them.Went to Video Magic for the first time in a couple of months;got “Brazil,” a new experimental movie. Played it after dinner + enjoyed it more than anything we’ve seen in a long time.Walked 2.5; played Straus, “Don Quixote.”
