Friday, March 6th

Library; returned “goldberg” score, got Mozart Violin Sonatas, Vol. II; also VCR of Bergman’s “Smiles of a Summer Night.”Video Magic; got “Dance with a Stranger,” a British film. Afternoon trip to Super D; got prescriptions filled, batteries, etc. Skipped walk. Steak for dinner, two Dalmonicos out of the freezer. Then watched “Dance with a Stranger”—a good movie, fora change.

Saturday, March 7th

First of the three Cal. Press books arrived—the one on Aeschylus. Boccaccio + Eliot still to come from a different warehouse. gwyn spent morningXXXXXXXXXremoval of XXXXXX XXXX her mother’s apartment. I took her VCR back to Video Magic. Walked 2.5 in 38.5—moderately fast pace, with no stops even at intersections. Played B’s 8th+ 9th; most of latter when back home. Began reading T.G. Rosenmayer’s The Art of Aeschylus; looks good through first two chapters, which are mostly technical.Played VCR of “Smiles of a Summer Night,” Berman’s 50s film. good as I remembered.

Sunday, March 8th

Cereal breakfast; bacon + egg later. Continued reading the Aeschylus book. Wrote to Paul Carmignani regretting that our letters crossed in the mail + congratulating him on getting his Ph. D. + the Franco-American Commission’s granting him a scholarship to return to this country—specifically, to Chapel Hill—ton continue his study of my work. Lean Cuisine. After supper, watched Nat’l geographic film on gorillas etc. Then finally, past midnight, part two of a two-part film interview with Lawrence Olivier, including clips from movies + plays, interviews with friends, etc. Interesting. Weight today, 160.5—a four-pound loss in the past six weeks or so.

Monday, March 9th

Ken Burns called from New Hampshire. He + film crew will be here on March 26 for extension of my interview next day. They will return in June for me to take them to Vicksburg for extensive filming. Continued Rossenmayer’s Aeschylussgetting better as it moves along. Other two books arrived from U. Cal. Press: Decameron+ the one of Eliot’s works. I’ll finish the Aeschylus study first. Letter from R. XXXX, editor of American Heritage, says he is delighted with my “Serhman letters” piece, will run it full length, + will send me a check for $500. good. Walked two miles; played Mozart syms. 39 + 40. Bed by 11.

Tuesday, March 10th

Library; returned VCR of “Smiles,” day overdue. Couldn’t locate scores of Beethoven Cello Sonatas.Continued Aeschylus study. getting still better. Drove out east; got VCR of “Quartet,” an early 80’s British film with Alan XXXX + Maggie Smith. On way back, stopped at La Patisserie + got two rum cakes filled with custard + topped, each, with a cherry—a sort of celebrature of getting below 160 (159.5) at this morning’s weigh-in-gwyn ate one, I the other. Then returned to Rosenmeyer + Aeschylus. Letter from RLR says Spanish inquiry has been followed up with copes of Three Novels+ Sep Sep; want more copies, there in NY, of latter. Another, from French agent, enclosed forms of tax exemption to permit payment of money from Gallimard, including advance on new soft back edition of L’Enfant.VCR: “Quartet.” Some what turgid, but good.
