Began reading T. McGuane short stories in collection, To Skin a Cat, Robert Gooch’s upcoming Wolf River selection. Instead of walking, took Gwyn to a new French-Canadian movie, “Decline of American Civilization.” Liked it.

Sunday, March 22nd

Walked 2.5 miles in 37 minutes flat; played Haydn string quartets, op. 55/3, 64/5. Near midnight finished McGuane stories; enjoyed most of them. Best stories, over all, I’ve read in a long time.

Bad news; Johhny+ Debbie’s three-week-old baby came down with what’s called “Projectile vomiting” + had to be taken to Le Bonheur for extensive examination, possibly proceeding a “brutal” operation. gwyn went to XXXXX XXXX. I stayed home for an appointment with Bill Thomas of the Commercial Appeal; an interview on Shiloh + a discussion of our trip here for the re-enactment April 4 = 5. At 2:15, with still no word about the baby, I called Debbie + found they were back home. The doctor wants to wait for a couple of daysto watch developments, + then (if necessary) operate for correction of the XXXXX hernia.Walked 1.5 in 34 mins under threat of rain; played Beethoven Appassionata Sonata; then when I got back, a quartet Op. 59/2, following score. Auspicious: As the World Turns began coming in at 1 o'clock, a half-hour later. This rearranges our life!

Unsuccessful search for a new Walkman at goldsmiths, but got four croissants at La Patisserie.Later, in afternoon, I drove out to Opus Two + got an auto-XX XXXXXX XXXX. On way home, dropped off the Cartier living-room clock for cleaning by Cline, who informed me he might have to keep it for two whole months. Signed a release for Robert Phillips to have full use of the Southern Historical Collection material of mine at Chapel Hill. Wolf River monthly dinner; Robert gooch host; book, Thomas McGuane’s To Skin a Cat. Not much liked, over all. House by 9:30.

Read Odyssey opening, Shan translation. Video shop; got VCRs of “Magic Flute” (Bergman) + “Alieu.” Watched former in afternoon, later at night. Both good, in their altogether different ways. Walked 2.5 in 37 mins. Played Beethoven Violin Concerto on new Aiwa Walkman. Enjoyed Berman filming of Zauberflöte; last saw it a dozen years ago in NY. Missed 4 o'clock dental appointment; forgot it—first time in my life.
