Fuzzy-feeling hangover from last night’s overindulgence in scotch + wine.Continued Aeschylusdaylong.Walked two miles in 35 mins. Played Haydn quartets. Lean Cuisine for dinner. Called Hugs in NY; offered $500 to cover expenses for visit home whenever convenient. Will send it, together with his regular $600 from me, this coming week. I’ll be glad to see him.

Sunday morning, weight 159, + holding.In evening, we drove out east to Johnny’s + Debbie’s for Johnny’s 38thbirthday; dinner was steaks cooked on an outdoor grill, birthday cake, with lighted candles, followed. Home by 9. .

Monday, July 13th
Iran-Contra joint committees resumed; today with questions + comments by senators + congress men instead of lawyers. Much better in its way. No word from Terminix about termite damage. Don’t know whether to call XXXX XXXXX or lawyer—or both. Walked 1.5 in 25 minutes; played Mozart piano concerto K. 459. XXXXX lot cooler. Good TV program (“Commanders”) on yammamoto, followed by a profile of the Hollywood director William Wyter. Continued Rosanmeyer’s Art of Aeschylus, with much enjoyment of secondreading.Still no word from Carolyn Reidy on Civil War softback sales, including QPB.

Tuesday, July 14th
Iran-Contra: windup of Ollie North’s testimony, followed by return of Robert McFarlane. Sent Hugs $1100 by bank telegraph: $600 for August allowance, plus $500 for travel home.Fried eggs on rye toast plus country bacon for dinner. Call in evening from Liz Rohatyn: her father, Wilson Fly, has suffered a massive stroke + is likely to die by morning—so likely, indeed, that they are already planning his funeral on Thursday. She + Felix + her sister + brother-in-law, Fredrika, + Otis XXXX, will stay with us while they’re here.

Friday, July 15th
Wilson Fly died last night or this morning, funeral Thursday, as planned.Johnny Shea sent the same antibiotic capsules, four a day for five days, to cure an outbreak of impetigo on both hands. Late morning, I drove out + saw Dr Safely, my dermatologist; he approved the prescription + gave me some follow-up capsules. Liz arrived in the evening, along with XXXX + Fredrika + their son John. Dinner here, with three bottles of California red.Call from Hugs. He’ll be coming here from New York on August 1. good news.
