MARCH 1944

26 Sun-Passion Sunday Went to Sunday School in morning and taught primary. Posted the Windy Weekly and letters. Went to S. School again in afternoon. Glorious day sat on lawn and revised theorems. Revised again in evening.

27 Mon Lovely day. Had a 2½ hr geometry exam in the morning. Could only do the first part. Had a free afternoon & did hardly any work. Frank came & put my wardrobe up in evening. Did some ironing in evening.

28 Tues-Cape Matapan Naval Victory, 1941 Had domestic science practical exam in morning. I made oatmeal biscuit cheese pasties and pancakes. Got 54% Had French exam in afternoon. The last one. Mummy made the curtains for my room& I made the curtain for the wardrobe in evening.

29 Wed Had lessons as usual. Miss Borrough gave us some homework but we're not going to do it. Had a nice history lesson. I started to make the frill for my curtains in evening.

MARCH-APRIL 1944

30 Thur Rather cold day. Played rounders instead of gym. Had a lovely time in maths lessons in afternoon. Colin came in just after tea. Finished my bedroom in evening. Did not do my science homework.

31 Fri-First Quarter, 12.34 p.m. Had just three lessons as usual. After break watched a net ball match between staff and girls. Staff won 8 - 5. Read all the afternoon, some of the time in the pavillion.

1 Apr. Sat-s.r. 5.37, s.s. 6.32 Rather cold day. Janet and I spring cleaned Janet's bedroom. I distempered the walls. Finished before 6 o'clock. Mr & Mrs Constable came to tea. Daddy& Mr Constable moved our future summer house on to the lawn. Had a bath in evening.

Provided they have been thoroughly hardened, plant out autumn sown Cauliflowers wintered in a cold frame, also Broad Beans and Peas sown in early February and raised under glass. Herbs of many kinds may now be sown or divided.

APRIL 1944

2 Sun-Palm Sunday Poured with rain until late in afternoon. Went to Sunday School in morning. Played piano in afternoon. S.L. Hump & Ashton came to tea and stayed the evening. Double Summer Time.

3 Mon Got up late. Had a terrible time at school all day. Whole form got in a row because of April fool we sent to Miss Burrough. Hump took Janet & I out to tea & to pictures in evening. Had a lovely time. Had a letter from George.

4 Tues Miserable rainy day. Had no lessons and broke up at 12 o'clock Miss Latimer left, varnished Janet's floor in afternoon and started to clean our future summer house.

5 Wed-Hilary Law Sittings end Ababa occupied, 1941 Fairly nice day. Showers in afternoon. Cleaned Mummy's bedroom mine, and the hall in morning. Continued to clean summer house in afternoon and started to paint inside. George arrived in evening he is just as full of fun as ever.

APRIL 1944

6 Thur-Maundy Thursday Germany invaded Yugoslavia, 1941 Janet and I got our work done early and then we started to do a jig-saw with George. Ted came in and brought his wife to see us. Went real crazy in afternoon & evening and had some good fun. When Janet had gone to bed played Tiddly Winks until nearly mid-night.

7 Fri-Good Friday

Got work done early and cleaned George's buttons. Then had a game. Auntie Marion & Joy came in afternoon with babies. George had a high time with them. Hump came for tea . Muriel came in evening and we played games.

8 Sat-Lady day Fire Insurance ceases Full Moon, 5.22 p.m. s.r. 5.20, s.s. 6.43 George went to Cambridge on early bus. Gorgeous day. Helped Mummy in morning. Drove tractor for 1 hr in afternoon. Janet got German Measles. Had a bath and went to bed early in evening.

Make the first sowing of Cos Lettuce and a small quantity of Round Beetroot and Turnips for summer use. Continue to make successional sowings of Carrots and Cauliflowers. Plant early potatos. Cold Districts.-In a nursery seed-bed make a sowing of an early maturing Cabbage and Cauliflower. On a well-prepared bed plant out Onions sown the previous August.

APRIL 1944

9 Sun-Easter Day Germany invaded Denmark, 1940 Quite a nice day. Went to Sunday School in morning and taught Primary. Read in the afternoon. Cycled to chapel in evening. There were 12 airmen there. Taffy brought 5.

10 Mon-Easter Monday. Bank Holiday Lovely day. Helped Mummie in the morning and we did a little washing. Mummy went to a first aid competition in Ely in afternoon. Janet still in bed. Drove tractor for Daddy in afternoon and evening.

11 Tues Lovely day again. Mummy washed in morning and I helped. Mummy went to Ely with Daddy in afternoon. I mowed the lawn and did some revision. Answered a letter from Betty in the evening.

12 Wed Lovely day. Mummy washed again I helped. Drove tractor in afternoon and evening for Daddy. Ted came for tea and supper He took my watch to clean.
