Remarks on Board Barque Oscar of Sag Harbor

Monday the 1 Januay 1849

This 24 hours Commences with a Typhoone from
the E S E heading S under a main Spencer
midle part the Same at 3 O Clock P M Started
the Pump and freed her at half past Eleven at
night blowed away the main Royal and Consid[erable?]
many of Our Sails got Split at 5 O Clock in
the morning She pitched the Fly Jib boom out
of her broke it off by the Cap and parted the Bob
Stay Called all hands and Set up the Bob Stay
and lashed the Fly Jib boon to the Jib boon
and lost all of the monkey rail and most of
the bulwarks on the Starbord Side Latter part
of the day more moderate the wind hauled to
the N N W Set the Fore Sail and a Close
reefed main Top Sail and Steered S E Employd
in Pumping Ship and lashing Cask and other
Jobs of Ships duty lost a part of the Galey
now we have no Boats and we look as though
we have but a Small part of a Ship Saw
nothing more So Ends this day Lat 24. 32 S

Tuesday the 2 Jan 1849

This 24 hours Commences with fresh Gales
from the N N W Steering S E under a Close
reefed main Top Sail and Fore Sail Midle
and Latter part more moderate turned the reefs
out of the Main Top Sail and Set the Main
Top Galient Sail Employd in unbending the Fore Top
Sail and bent another unbent the Fore Top Galient
Sail and repaired the Galey and Started a Fire
for the First time 3 days Saw nothing So Ends
this 24 hours Lat 26. 51 S Long 160. 21 W

Wednesday the 3 Jan 1849

This 24 hours Commences with fine breezes and
a heavy Swell from the N W Steering S E Midle
and Latter Calms Employd in drying and bunching
bone Saw nothing So Ends the day Lat 27. 12 S Lat

Thursday the 4 Jan 1849

Thirs 24 hours Commences with Calms and Light
breezes from the E N E heading S E with all Sail
Set Midle and Latter part fine breezes from the Same
quater Employd in Ships duty Saw nothing Lat S Ln

Friday the 5 Jan 1949

This 24 hours Commences with fine breezes from the
E N E Steering S E with all Sail Set midle and
Latter part the Same Employd in drying and bunching
Bone and picking over Potatoes Saw nothing
So Ends this 24 hours Lat 28. 49 S Long 159. 35.
