Tuesday June 3rd 1845 Commences with strong gales from the N & W. Ship with double reefed top sails. Lowered and chaced [CHASED] whales but could not strike. At 7 PM take in sail. Heading to the N & E. At 12 midnight wear ship th [TO THE] S & W [in the CROSSED OUT] and hoisted up the lee boats. In the morning saw whales. Set a double reefed fore top sail and lower for whales but did not get hold, the weather being verry [VERY] bad. Latt [LATITUDE] by Obs [OBSERVATION] 46=24' N Long [LONGITUDE] by Chro [CHRONOMETER] 163°=34" East [VERTICAL TEXT IN THE LEFT MARGIN: Whales here]

Wednesday June 4th This day commences with strong gales from the Westward. Lowered once for whales but could not get hold. The whales being to the windward and the weather verry [VERY] bad. At 7 PM take in sail as usual. Head to the N & W. Latter part the same, ending with a gale. Latt [LATITUDE] Obs [OBSERVATION] 46 49 N Long [LONGITUDE] by Chro [CHRONOMETER] 163°=09" East

Thursday June 5th Comes in with a gale of wind from the WSW and clear weather. Ship heading to the N & W. At 4 PM the weather moderating. Make sail and tack to the S & W. At 8 PM take in sail and the wind hauling to South. Tack to the Westward. At 4 AM make sail and stand SSW. The wind having hauled to SE. Latt [LATITUDE] by Acct [ACCOUNT] 46 37 N Long [LONGITUDE] by Acct [ACCOUNT] 162°=20" East

Friday June 6th Commences with a light breeze from the S & E attended with a thick fog. Steer by the wind to the Southward W,rly [WESTERLY] wishing to get a little East with all. At 4 PM take in sail with a moderate breeze and plenty of rain. At the same time the wind hauling to the WSW. Wear ship to the S & E and set the jib but the wind soon hauling WNW. Take in to a close reef in order to make a S E,rly [SOUTHEASTERLY] drift in the morning.
