Whales in sight. Ship heading NNE. Saturday June 7th Commences with strong gales from the N & W. Ship heading S.W. At 5 PM set double reefed top sails. In the afternoon struck a Right whale which run away with the boats. Lower again a little before sunset but did not get hold. Take in sail with whale in sight. Ship heading NNE. Wind fresh from NW. Ends. Sunday [May CROSSED OUT] June 8th This day we have fine pleasant weather. Wind from the N & W. At 4 AM make sail and chaced [CHASED] whale without success several times. Tuesday June 10th Comes in with calm weather. Chaced [CHASED] several whales before breakfast but could not strike. Latter part took a light breeze from the South. Steer North.
