Physick & Surgery

An Excellent sulep or safran water & milk water
To a quarte of whey a small handfull of Damask rose leaves
from buds with a small handfull of femirary infused in clary-
-fyed whey halfe an hour close stopt. a litle boyling. Take the
milk curds of the whey & then straine it. Drink it coole.
For the milk water Lute the still very close and a soft fire
let it stand till its cold before you straine it.
For the safran water or cooling julels leaving out the safran
4 pounds of pearle barley make it into a Gallon of barley water
3 pounds of saxsafras 3 pounds arrice roots shied thin one pound
of Cardamons bruised one handfull of unsett bysop one handfull
of Coltsfoot 2 handfull of mowseare 2 handfull of Dendelyon
infuse this in a piphin & paste it up close sett it on a gentle
fire 48 hours lett it stand till it is cold then strayne it and add
to it 18 pence of safran for feavers or any such distemper excellent
good for a consumption take one third of a quarte morning & night
If you want of sleepe sweeten it with a syrup of cowshys. If faint
with Jellyflowers. if gripe a handfull of read roses infused and
some sugar. For a consumption take it 2 months dayly in bed
att 5 in the morning one third of a quarte and another going to bed.
without safran it keepe but 7 days with it 14 days.

For an Ague cake or Bigg-belly or worms in children

Take unsett leekes 2 handfull wormswood 2 handfull. fetherfew 2
handfull, chope them small as you doe pott hearbs, then fry them in
a frying pan or large fireshovell and wett them with an Oxe gall
doe not burn them nor frye them Crispe & drye but like a Tansey
when they are soe fryed that they are all soft & well soaked in the gall
then putt it into a linning bagg & lay it as warme as the child can -
well sufer it all over the child's belly from above the pitt of the stomach
before the navell. Lay it on att night when the child goes to Bed &
bind it on with the blanket or a roller and when it coms of, have
a peece of flanell ready to putt upon the Childs Belly & stomach in
the day time, for these things att night will make the child tender in
the day

the day, and apt to take cold, this bagg must be layd on 3 nights
together, & 2 or 3 nights before the full of the moone will do best.
the same hearbes will serve all the 3 nights, only they must be
wett every night with fresh gall, and if they be grou'n more
dry att last then att first as they will be lett them soake a
little in the gall before you frye them. In case you cannot
gett green wormwood or fetherfew, dryed will serve. my Lady Purbex.

A Receit for an Ague

Take two ounces of plague water cold distilled & 24 grains of
salt wormwood. So mix it and give it to the patient an houre
before the fitt. Repeated if needs require.

Another Receit for an Ague

take a whole nuttmegg the like quantity of Roach alum,
soe pound it in a Mortar & steepe it in a pinte of white wine
for a night, then divide it in two parts, & give half of it to
the patient half an houre before the fitt, & the other part, half
an houre after the fitt.

For the migrain in the Head

Take Centry and Bittony & steep it in white wine, and when
you think it strong enough of the hearbs, as you may know by
the bitterness of it, straine it and keepe it in a great wide mouths
glass, or steep it in a wide mouth glass. Drink a good glass of it
every morning fasting.

Another for the migrain in the Head or convulsions fitts

Take Conserve of read piane flowers, to be take night or morning,
or more. Aqua Epileptcia take in fitts or when feumes doth
arise a spoonfull or more att a time. Item for the migrain in the
head or any giddnes take half an ounce of male peoney's roots when
they be scraped and dryed in an oven & half an ounce of male peony berries
half an ounce of nuttmegs. a quartet of an ounce of Bittony. a quarter
of an ounce of Rosemary tops, both being dryed. Beate all these into fine
pouder then mingle them very well together with a quarter of a pound
of white sugar Candy finely beaten.
