Physick and Surgery

To make the Countesse of Kent's Pills

Take 2 ounces of the best aloes beaten & searcht, then take Damas roses
half blowme & pickt the best of the leaves, beate them & straine a pinte
of the iuice, & lett it stand a little, then poure the cleare into a Sylver bason
& putt the 2 ounces of Aloes to it, then lett it Stand on the fire to be
Scalding hott, but not boile, then stirr it very well, & when tis thick enough
to make into pills putt it into a gally pott & Keepe it so vntill you vse it,
To a Child you may giue a pill of the bigness of a pea, to a Man or Woman
the bigness of a french beane.

A Medecine to cleare the Eye-sight found out by Dr Purslow
Sometimes Bishop of Hull & Suffragan of York who att the
age of 125 years was able to read any printe without Spectacles
which att the age of 50 he could not.

Take the oyle of the white of an Egg made as followeth; part the white
from the yolk as clear as you can without breaking ye yolk, then beate it
with a broade pointed knive for the space of half an houre in a porringer,
or bason, so the foame will rise as big as a half penny loafe, then smooth it
with a knive like a Sugar loafe, & lett it Stand six houres to setle, then softly
poure out the oyle which will be vnder it into a litle close vial to keep out
the wind or ayre, and the oyle will be as clear as quicksylver, then putt to it
So much running honey as there is of oyle, adding thereunto the Juice of ye
green leafe and roote of the wild dansy as much as of honey, first picking
and well washing it, then Stamping & Straining it thorow a new linnen cloth
and when you have mingled, straine them all again thorow the Same cloth,
then putt it up till it grown cleare. Then putt a drop or two in your Eyes with
a feather morning & evening every day till you find recovery, and afterward
now and then, when you find any decay in your Sight. It will be good to Sleepe
an houre or two after it in the morning if you can.

A Water for the Eyes

Take 3 dragmes of the pouder of Tubia & 3 dragmes of the pouder of allowis
and two dragmes of white sugar candy, six ounces of white wine, Six ounces of
white roses water. Mix all these together & sett them in the chimny corner
in a glass in the winter, and in the Sun in the Summer Shaking twice or
thrice a day.

A Water for a Fistula

Take one ounce of white Coporis, half an ounce of Roach-allum, Burne
both these together 6 penny woth of precipitis finely grounded, to this take
a botle of water, and when it boiled take it of the fire & putt in the ingredients
and when tis cold putt it in Botle, and it will keepe seaven years.

An Excellent Plaster to Keepe a Woman from Miscarrying.

Take of the choicest mastick 4 dragmes, gum Elemi half an ounce
Burgundy pitch 3 dragmes, Beniamin & Dragon's blood of each two
dragmes, melt all these and Straine them, and add to them of the
bole-armoniak finely poudred two dragmes, of the trochisces called
alipta moschata one dragme, of Venice turpentine a litle boiled
5 dragmes, of the plaster of read led made of the oyle of quinces
half an ounce, of Bees wax one dragme & a half, of Indian balsom
2 Scruples, of oyle of Spike half an ounce. Make these all into
one plaster & spread them vpon leather, one for the region of
the back, and another for the lower region of the Belly.

For the King's Evill

Take the third part of a pound of lignum Vitae, putt to in 4 pintes
of Spring water, putt it all into a new Jugg, paste it very close, & lett it
boile 4 houres in a pott of water. Drinke half a pinte of this in the
morning fasting a little warme, the like quantity in the afternoone,
att 4 of the clock, as much more att going to bed att spring & fall if
to prevent. Butt if there be a Soare then drink it constantly, and lay
a hound's tongue leave on the Soare fresh twice a day.

A Cure for Burston Children

Take of mastick one ounce, of white wax one ounce, of mutton suett
four ounces, melt all these 3 together, lett them not boile but litle,
So dipe in the Cloth & lett it laye till it be cold, then cutt a peece of
the cloth & laye it to the place every 24 houres.
For the pouder. take Kernell of ashine Kees & sleue them in an
Oven and make them into pouder, and giue the party as much of the
pouder as will laye on a 6 pence in any broth or drink they eate
or drinke morning & evening, fasting an houre after it.
Cloath it night & day. Oyntment must be vsed in the morning
before you take the Broth & yn lay halfe an houre after it

To gaine present Ease in fitts of the Stone

Take an ounce of Sweet Almonds newly drawn, an ounce of white Sugar
Candy, or any fine Sugar finely beaten, an ounce of Syrup of Mash-Maloes
Mingle this together, and take half of this proportion att a time, as
often as you find any paine, If you cannot take the syrup you may leave it,
out, I never found this to faile, butt to give present Ease.

To cure the paine or Webs in the Eyes

Take the tops of Hemlock in the Spring, bruise them in a mortar with bay Salt
with half the quantitu as of the other. Apply it to the contrary wrist & bind it close.
