My dear:
Your card was received. Jack has everything he needs,
overcoat and underwear, etc. He did not have a wearable stitch
when I got him except Helen's nightgown and, before I left Los
Angeles, I got him a complete new outfit and had the old clothes
done up in a bundle. He did not have wear any heavy drawers when
he left there that you speak of; he had a light flimsy pair in
holes which I left in L A. I had forgotten the wash suits he
brot (brought), but those he says he will not wear and I don't want to make
him wear something that other boys of his age do not, so if you
want them, we will return to you; but they could be made good
use of here by someone, I am sure. Of course, you have so much
to do and, in the excitement, you forgot what he did take. He
says he went barefooted in the heavy frost so I am sure you do
not need to worry about his not having clothes, for now he has
everything he needs. For ten days after he came, he had running
sores on his feet so that he could scarcely wear his shoes.
I had to dig out splinters and sand that had partly healed up
and then became running sores, bathed them in hot water, did
them up in peroxide and cotten, but they are all fine now.
He is getting to be a boy to be proud of, his little bent
shoulders are straightening up and he holds his head up so well
and looks one in the eye, and he looks just as much like Jack
Miner at 4 years now, as possible. He has Christian Science-Love
to thank for this wonderful change in so short a time, for I
felt he was almost hopeless when I saw him, and even you would
have to take a hard, second look to be sure it was the same boy.
He is living with me now in a steam heated room and
you may be sure he is kept warm. I really wish you could
see him. He looks so good.
That was a remarkable demonstration of what Science
can do, but there remains a lot to be done yet, but of the
outcome, we are sure.
We will probably move to Berkeley soon, as I think
it will be better all around. He did not like the boarding
school so well the last week, that is staying at the school;
but he likes it fine now, this way, and he seems to be getting
along faster too. His teachers are all Scientists and they
are giving him special attention.
Last night, I went up to get him a satchel for his
books and lunch, and then we went up to another floor where
they had a play room for children, a circus, sliding boards
and teeters. His eyes did some sparkling for a half hour, you
may believe.
I must hasten as I am very busy today.
Love,
KMH
