Ft. Ruger, H.I. February. 26, 1921

Dear friend Alice:

By an inspection of your, [[inserted above]:letter]], I have noticed that you were attempted, [tempted], to write in Jan. instead of Feb. Probably, time is going to, [too], fast for you, but not for me. I certainly am anxious for June 1922 to show itself. I am already tired of this island, and the company must stay here two years, but our new barracks will soon be ready. We will then be in a post and not in a woods as we are now and we won't feel as lonesome.

It sure wasn't Holderbaun that was hurt in the balloon basket but, Phillips, as I was standing by the basket when he was taken out and rushed to the hospital. Holderbaun has sure played the part of a wolf in sheep's clothing. He claimed to be a Christian, but his heart was as black as coal. He has, [deserted?], and owes most every man in the Company money.

I thank you very much for the Christmas present that was sent. As Holderbaun isn't here, I will return his. I supposed Alfano was glad to get back to Arcadia. I sure rejoiced to see him get out as he didn't like the Army at all.

It is very warm here. The mosquitoes are so bad that we have to sleep under a mosquito, [bar?], and when the light is, [[struck text]: lite]], burning the tent is full of bugs.

There are a few mountains here. Hiking isn't anything to what it was going up Mt. Wilson or to Fern Lodge three weeks ago. I hiked almost ten miles.

The Company isn't going to the firing range now. Each Company goes once a year for a week and I am sure glad that I don't have to go more as the noise on the range is enough to drive a person wild.

How long does your school last? And what grade are you in?

It is very warm and my brains seem to be doing the hula hula dance so I hope you will excuse this attempt of a letter.

As ever a friend,

Carl

P.S. Ask Alfano how he likes Honolulu. XX & OO
