some of the men money & they got
drunk with it, but there was but
a few, our Reg. was the most civil
of any. The 21st Mass. & the 51st N[illegible].
acted badly. at Columbus they had a
fight with the Provost Gard who shot
several of them. the bullies then pitched
into the Gard & would have killed
them all if they had not fled

At Cincinnati they plundered &
stole things that were of no use to
them, in short they acted more like
devils then men. It is strange what
beasts whiskey will make of men

At one oclock we crossed the muddy
Ohio & were quartered in the City
Hall. Covington Ky. till Wednesday
morning took the train & went to Paris
where we arrived at about 8 PM. We
passed through a fine country of splendid
farmes & many nice residinces. We

saw but a few flags they were all
loudly cheered however. I remember,
just as we were about leaving Paris Friday
morning & waiting in the street for
the battery & teams to pass a little girl
about Emma's age I should tink &
size was holding a pretty little flag &
seemed quite pleased that we took notice
of it When a lady who was looking
out the window above called her by
name and said your flag is "secesh"
"tait either cried the little girl indig-
nantly. why yes it is said the lady
above "taint either cried the little girl.
then the lady counted the stars on the
little girls flag & said "it must be
secesh" for it had but eleven stars"
No it 'tant said the smart little
girl it is a Union flag don't you say
it is secesh again. To-day I have
had a good dinner of fresh pork
