from this flowering aspect as highly as they deserve. The Apricots which are the 1st to blossom are over. Of wild flowers the plant par excellence has been Lilium tigeryrum. It abounds everywhere. In the Gorges, sides of fields, around isolated boulders, around House grounds and along the woodside. The more stony the place the better. Sometimes hundreds of square yards of the river banks is one river of lovely gold. Really it must be seen in such profusion to be thoroughly appreciated. A very stony

and fully exposed places is what it revels in. The Primulas in the Ichang Gorges are now over and there is very little in flower. In the Wushan Gorge I went for a walk along the magnificent road which has been excavated out of solid rock. It is a wonderful piece of work. It is seldom less than four feet wide and in splendid repair. Sometimes it is not more than 100 feet above the river, at others fully a thousand. It would be a simple matter to launch onesself into eternity. This and the road through the Wind Box Gorge are really engineering feats that no country need be ashamed of. Village of Chin Tan. We had a slight head wind in the Wind-box Gorge and the men were sent up to the high road to truck. A rather unusual thing. We had fully 600 yards of rope out. It was a slow and hard days work. It was not till 5 p.m. that we were done for the night. The [?] [?] were in full swing though the rising river was [ensuring?] a steady retreat.

The season is earlier at Kuipu. The [?] and [?] were in [?] fit for gathering. I noted [?] [?] in flower with it
