Hysteria

OverviewVersions

Description

Old meaning: It generally occurs in paroxysms, the principal characters of which consist in alternate fits of laughing and crying, with a sensation as if a ball ascends from the pelvis towards the stomach, chest, and neck, producing a sense of strangulation. It appears to be dependent upon irregularity of nervous distribution in very impressible persons. Modern meaning: A psychological syndrome manifesting in many unexplained symptoms throughout the body's organ systems, now known as somatization disorders.
