Refers to a heat treatment where a solid chemical compound is raised to a high temperature (without melting) under restricted supply of oxygen to remove impurities, volatile substances, and/or to cause thermal breakdown. Commonly used to remove carbon from limestone to yield calcium oxide (quicklime) for cement, and remove carbon from magnesium carbonate to yield magnesium oxide.
