manna

OverviewVersions

Description

A sugary extract from the sap of the tree Fraxinus ornus (Eurasian ash, manna ash) that contains mannitol and has been used as a laxative and demulcent. In the 1400s it was thought to compare favorably with the biblical description of manna, hence its name. The sugar mannose and the sugar alcohol mannitol both derive their names from the extract.
