Description

A biennial plant in the dandelion tribe within the daisy family. The white latex sap contains lactucarium, called "lettuce opium" due to its sedative, analgesic, and mildly euphoric properties. Aka prickly lettuce, milk thistle (not Silybum marianum, also called milk thistle), compass plant, scarole. See related Lactuca virosa.
