Description

Old meaning: A disease characterized by anxiety, gripings, spasms in the legs and arms, vomiting and purging, generally bilious. Vomiting and purging are the essential symptoms. Modern meaning: An infection of the small intestine by some strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae usually through the fecal-oral route by contaminated food or water. The classic symptom is large amounts of watery diarrhea that lasts a few days, and can be so severe that it rapidly leads to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
