A small (1–2 mm) red or purple spot on the skin or conjunctiva, caused by minor bleeding from broken capillary blood vessels. Usually used in the plural, petechiae, since a single lesion is seldom noticed or significant. Underlying causes include, trauma, infections, and non-infectious conditions.
