* The practice of Dr Clarke, of Edinburgh, was, to confine his
patients to their bed, where he kept them in a continued sweat for 48
hours. But Dr Whytt adopted a different plan, by which he
never failed to cure. He bled frequently with numerous leeches apply’d
to the joints affected, he clensed the alimentary canal with refrigerating
cathartics, and he put a blister to the part occasionally, forbiding
the use of animal food and fermented liquors at the same
time.
