mercury and proceed to speak of the diseases in which it is used. As a remidy
in rheumatism on that I have little to say but in some cases we
must have recourse to it, and some indeed cannot be cured without.
Dr Monroe employ'd but only when the disease was combined with
syphilis, many practitioners recommend small doses of calomel at
night. I have frequently employ’d it and found it usefull, but I
think that alone will not cure genuine rheumatism, though it
sometimes will when combined with guaicum, it is an indispensable
medicine when combined with guaicum in rheumatism succeeding
syphillis, I give it in the evening besides mercury I give Dovers powders, when
rheumatism assumes the form of an intermittant, little dependence
can be placed on mercury for a radical cure, rheumatism often
appears after stopping Gonorrhea too suddenly by strong astringent
injections, here mercury is usefull, the disease in this case often
subsides upon a return of the running, this circumstance should
induce us to inquire of patients (whoom we suspect) about this previous
disease. Dr Hunter has employ’d mercury in combination with opium
in inflamitory diseases. Phthisis Pulmonalis. I can say
