Letter from the Surveyor General dated Halifax May the 12th, 1786 to Major {Thomas} Millidge.

Sir. The Governor having lately appointed persons in Digby to assign lands to the Loyal Refugees and Others.

he as well as myself think proper and necessary you should lay your map which you have prepared for this Office before them for their inspection, that they may see what has been located, and what remains to be located, so far as you have been able to asscertain the matter; that they may have an Oppertunity of adding such lots, and names to the plans as may apply to them for land before the plan is sent to this Office, which will save much time to the people applying who ought long since to have had land and when it comes to the Office with those lots, and remarks added, they shall if necessary have a fair copy certified by

Memorandum It is to be observed that upon the receipt of this letter the Major did not comply with The Surveyor Generals directions, but added such names to certain lots, as he chose, many of which were afterwards obliged to be altered in order to the keep the Agents register book correct. E.B. Agent.

{Memorandum} Page [2s?] This letter was wrote and by the advise of the Attorney {General} {William} Blowers, who had been applied to respecting the properest mode of getting the books [et cetera?] from {Colonel} Barton; it had been proposed to commence a prosectution against {Mister} Barton, but the Attorney general advised as the mildest method of proceeding to write the letters referred to, counseling that the {Lieutenant} {Colonel} would not be so hardy as to act on open violation of the{Governor's} orders.

Copy Letter from the Secretary of the Province to {Misters} William McDonald, and Isaac Hatfield Agents.

Halifax August 19th, 1786

Gentlemen

I am directed by His Excellency The Governor to acquaint you in order that you may make it known to the settlers in the Township of Digby, that to prevent any errors or mistakes, he will not grant any more lands in that township, until such time as the Books, plans, and papers relative to the past Agency shall be delivered into your hands by Lieutenant Colonel Barton.

And His Excellency is determined in future to receive no recommendations for lands but such as comes signed by the Agents he has been pleased to appoint.

Halifax September 30th, 1786

Gentlemen

I am directed by His Excellency the Governor to acquaint you that he has been pleased to appoint {Mister} Andrew Snodgrass to act with you as one of the Agents for the Loyalists, in the township of Digby in the room of {Mister} Brudenell who finds himself necessitated to decline that Office, having private business of his own to transact which may occasion his being absent from the settlement for some time.
