Status: Needs Review

Fort Stanwix Aug. 16th. 1759.

Sir,
I find the Batteux service but ill carried on, thro the
whole Communications, when the men and officers are left to themselves
they are continualy stopping, and do not proceed with Neat Dispatch
that is Necessary, when Mr. Cuyler setts out with them with
Provisions I make no Doubt but his Diligence and Ability will
oblige them to make more Dispatch, but when [?] with Stores
act by themselves, their Laziness and little [?] to do
service is intolerable. The Complaints betwixt this and
Oswego I shall endeavor to remedy, and believe some Examples
must be made before I shall effect it properly, for I hear of
nothing but Mutiny and Rascality. I am informed there is now
but three weeks Provision at Oswego, and what is at [?]
here, will not be sufficient to load the next Convoy which is
expected to return in a few Days. This will inform you of the
necessity of a quick supply from Schenechady, with must be
forwarded without Delay, and we must get in a good shock, for [?]
supplys from Hand to mouth, will not victual the Garrisons to be
left in the winter, or enable us to proceed on any other Enterprize.
Mr. Glen told me many of the Batteux were so wore as to be almost
aslep, on which ice? I ordered him to make 20 new ones directly,
no Pains or coin must be spared to furnish Oswego with proper
supplys of all sorts, we have taken [?], and made a Conquest
of Niagara, and they must be supported at all expense. I find
many [?] Goods have been carried in Lieu of Provisions
