It grows in stagnant waters with a loose muddy bottom. It has a long taper root, from wh numerous thread-like fibers are sent off — Towards ye surface of ye water these fibres become flat, & assume ye form of a winged =leaf. The foliola are linear, & nearly opposite, tho^ less regular than is common in a winged leaf. At ye surface of ye water large hollow scapes, from 1 to 6 or 8 inch rise from ye root, about 6 or 8 inches high surrounded at ye base with a winged foliage, which is gnerally under ye surface water. Blossoms verticillate towards ye sumit of ye scapes. Segts of ye Calix tubular long — linear. Corol Tube of ye Corol cylindrical, of ye longes of ye length of ye Calix. Fel Flowers white & some times tinged with red. Sup= =ported on short flower-stalks vel with a leaf (like ye Segt of ye Calix at their base), linear, & as long as ye stem. This plant make a very

Radical leaves many. Several tufts of leaves rise from ye head of ye same root, besides those ar?nd ye tuft from ye center of wh ye stem ascends. ovate, rather long flat stem — leaf broad at ye upper part — apex pointed. Uperside hairy light green. Under side cottony & greenish White. Stems from 8 to 12 inch. high cottony, with lance alternate, linear, sessile leaves, thick stem & leaves thick set with cottony hairs. Stem terminates in 3 or 4 level heads, Seeds?

[136] [? sup]ported on short fruit-stalks [?] head ovate. The inner [?scales] of ye Calix linear, sharp= pointed, ye upper half white. In some heads there are no female florets — all are herma= =prodite. Feather downy Stem sometimes branched near ye top.

Grows in dry pasturs among rocks, & in open wood land of a poor loamy soil — Very common B.

June 18 Gnaphalium plantatini-folium Low Mouse Ear —

Roots extend on ye surface of ye ground, sending down tufts of small fibres. Radical leaves in tufts inversely ? ovate, broad in ye upper part, & ye apex nearly circular, with a slightly crenated, & terminates in a single tooth. The leaves much larger yn ye preced. species. Uper surface ligh green, thick feet with downy hairs under side white, with a greenish tinge. Stem from 3 to 6 or 7 inch high.

This plant scarcly resembles ye fromer, & often grows intermixed with it. The les radical leaves are much larger & broader — not so narrow at ye apex — the head is globular ye other ovate — scales often coloured Stems much shorter, more erect & not branched — In dry pastures among rocks in ledges, gravelly places. In a large meadow on ye road from Hampsted to Haverill — along causway thru^ ye meadow — principally on ye Western side — The meadow very wet

Brassica Napus? Vel N Sp Gen Chr. accord tolerably. Vid With. It be a Napus, it is a variety. It is not uncommon common in cultivated ground. We call it Scurvy Grass. Probably an exotic. Grows rich, rather moist Land.

Cal. Perianth. tetraphyllum, erectum : foliolis lanceolatis (The 2 outer leaves wh are on opposite sides — oblong — lapping their edges, wh are husky, on ye edges of ye other 2, wh are lanceolate, not chan= =nelled.) basi gibbis, erectis, parallelis, deciduis.
