The stamina — 4 very short filaments, inserted about midway fo into ye tube, about mid= =way from ye base to ye mouth of the tube. The anthera are oblong, erect, inserted laterally on ye filaments, & conceal them. The Germin is orbicular, containing 2 cells, & each of them a No. of roundish seeds. Style is filiform, long & erect. The stigma flatish, oblong & bifid, & riseth above ye limb of ye tube.
The root is fibrose — the leaves very small, & lanceolate & acuminated stand in clusters at ye top of ye roots, from which rises several quadrangular stalks with joints at an inch distance. At these [j?]oints stand 2 leaves stand opposite. Some

There are several varieties of this genus — some of them are of a light blue & a short tube. It is a ye Class Tetrand. Monogy. and comes ye nearest to the Houstonia of Hill to any other genus But varies in ye styles being longer than stamina. The tube is small & cylindrical untill if rises above ye segments of ye calix — it there widens into a companu= =late form, & the Anthera Stamina & an= therae stand in ye base of this Companula. I am not certain where ye Stigma begins as there is some doubt whether it be not [?] [agnst?] ye top of ye anthera & so is bifid only half way — but think it is higher, near ye limb of ye tubes, & just below ye sinus. — In some doubt about ye seeds —

Stam. Filament
Corol. 5 lanceolate — obtuse, (at apex), patent white petals, inserted by narrow ungues, into ye calix at each sinus just within ye tube. Caducious.
Stam. Filaments about 20 filiform, & when they rise are bent inwards untill ye polen is discharged, when they become erect. Do not all rise together but one after another. The Anthera are semi-orbicular with a deep stria on ye exterior part. N.B. The filaments are inserted into ye tube of ye calix by a broad base. Three stand just inserted against & just below each petal of ye corol. & one agst each segment of ye Calix are at equal [cl?]. When ye petal of ye coral. is fallen three filaments seem to occupy their places.

Germen. Globular, striated, which I suppose will be a berry. Can perceive 4 or 5 loculaments, wh seem to con= tain seeds. — Vide note Book 2. under letter J.
