Correspondence from Scottish botanist G. A. Walker (George Arnott Walker) Arnott (1799-1868), dated August 18, 1828, regarding duplicate specimens of plants Arnott had collected in the Pyrenees, which he was sending to Elliott. Arnott notes he has numbered the specimens and included in his letter the localities by number. He also writes of his plans to travel to Russia and his hopes that Elliott will send him some North American plant specimens.

Sir,

As in every other science, so in Botany, [?] cannot advance without a correspondence with other countries I say this as some apology for my writing to you at present.

A few years ago I spend a considerable time on the continent, particularly in the South of France, Spain, the Pyrenees, and Switzerland collecting plants, and improving myself in my knowledge of Botany. I was enabled to bring home with me an enormous mass of plants and among them many duplicates — Ever since my return I have been engaged in arranging them and have yet scarcely finished. At the same time I have got to the end of the Rosaceae — and have now put up for you as a small offering a packet out of my duplicates — you will find among them some specimens of rare plants that I collected in the gardens in the South of France and Geneva, and which I trust you will find well determined, as I spent three months at Geneva to examine De Candolle's herbarium — as far as he had published his prodromus.

To the plants from the Pyrenees I have affixed

no locality — merely nos — but I send you on the opposite page, a list of the localities for the whole of themy Pyreneean nos.

At present I have not time to put up more specimens for you — as in two days I am to start for Russia, where I am to remain for two or three months. On my return home by Christmas however I shall make up for you another large packet containing the remainders of the orders I have not yet laid aside — and as I give you a specimen of every thing I have among my duplicates, I hope that I may in time expect something good from you — indeed my friend Mr. Parker has often talked to me of your liberality — It is chiefly the rarer or ill determinded N. American species I desire — but I shall be happy to have all — Such as the Violaceae, Cistinea, Carices Compositae, Salices, and some others, not forgetting the Dionaea muscipula! that will be very precious to me.

Sir I am your servant G.A. Walker Arnott

I have sent the packet to Dr. Hooker's care at Glasgow he forwarded to you —
