A cloudy day, thunder in the P.M., rain
in the evening. This A.M. W. & I drove to
Sandy Pond and spent some 2 hrs there by
the Boat-house some 5 min. walk from the
road while the horse was being shod. By the
Boat-house is a grove of some 2 dozen
trees of Quercus prinus. They were of various
sizes, the largest being 53 ½ in. in circumference
2 ft from the ground and at least 50 ft high.
We took home some seedlings. There were a great
many Black Birches all around in the woods
some of them good-sized trees. Carroll met us
and we got home in time for dinner.
H. A. Purdie came up this P.M. We went up
the North Branch above Gibraltar. Cool and
quiet. Changed blotters this evening. I have
found nothing to put in press for the past two days.
We found several clumps of Peltandra on the
North Branch
