San Diego Sept 20 1943

[letterhead: top hat on shield with text "USA"]

Dear Sis;

I guess you thought I had forgotten you, but I really haven't. I had planned on surprising you by dropping for a few day's but I don't guess I will be able to. I thought I would get a few days leave but the way things look now that will be impossible. The recruits are pouring in by the thousand, we haven't got enough Instructors to handle them. I am still here in San Diego doing the same work, guess I will be here for the duration. So you don't have to worry about me. I still don't like California, I had much rather be back on the east coast. I can't afford to go on liberty very often

they really rob the servicemen out here. Once in awhile I get a couple of days off and go to Los Angeles. I was up there a couple of weeks ago and was at the Hollywood canteen. I was dancing with this girl, I danced with her a couple of dances and then we watched the show after it was over the master of ceremonies announced that we had a famous star with us and named a couple of pictures she had played in then he said she was in the crowd and asked her to stand up. Then the girl I was with stood up, she was Miss Ruth Hussey. Was I surprised.

I sure would like to be back in Carolina but I would have to get at least a fifteen day leave to make it and that is out of the question now. This will make the fourth Xmas I have been away. I won't

know what it is like to spend a Xmas home. I haven't heard from Henry lately, I think I owe him a letter so I guess I had write him while I am writing. I don't guess I will recognize my little neice when I see here she will be so big. But the way things look now we may all be together again before too long. Well Eva give my love to all. Even though I don't write very often I think of you all.

Love Jewell
