About

Paul Clifford Domke and John R. Caton Photographs from China, 1936-1939
Two Carleton representatives, Paul Cliff Domke and Jack R. Caton, who participated in Carleton-in-China Program, taught at Ming I Middle School located in Fenyang, Shanxi Province, during the years of 1936 to 1939. Both Carleton alumni retreated with the students and faulty to a few 'safe' school locations, due to the outbreak of Second Sino-Japanese War. One of them even traveled with students and faculty of 'the National Xi'an Provisional University' in the spring of 1938. The areas that they both stayed and visited had included but were not limited to: Fenyang, Linfen, Jishan (Shanxi Province), Xian (Shaanxi Province), Beijing/Peking, Chengtu & Baoji (Sichuan Province), Yichang (Hubei Province), Kunming (Yunnan), Angkor Wat (Cambodia), etc. We hope you can help us to identify the buildings, locations and people in the photos. The digital collection is available at Carleton College: link.
