Transcribing

Once you sign up for an account, a new Transcribe tab will appear above each page.

You can create or edit transcriptions by modifying the text entry field and saving. Each modification is stored as a separate version of the page, so that it should be easy to revert to older versions if necessary.

Registered users can also add notes to pages to comment on difficult words, suggest readings, or discuss the texts.

Card Formats

  • There are multiple card formats, which means that not every card has the same information. Utilize the fields that correspond to the fields on the card you are indexing. For example, if the card says "Date of Naturalization" it likely does not also say "Date Certificate Issued." You may leave one blank. Likewise, most cards list either "Date of Birth" or "Age," but not both. You do not need to calculate the age if it is not given.
  • Many cards also have a reverse side, which has been scanned as a separate image. The reverse side is often, but not always, titled "Additional Information in Court Record." When indexing a card like this, use the field "Additional Information in Court Record" to transcribe all of the information on the card. You may leave the other fields blank.
  • Fields

    • Needs Review: Check "Needs Review" if you believe something is misspelled, or a word is illegible. It is helpful to include a comment in the Notes fields explaining what needs review.
    • Dates: Use the format MM/DD/YYYY for dates.
    • Blanks: If any information is not available on the card, leave the field blank. We are transcribing different types of cards using the same fields, so you may leave several fields blank.
    • City of Residence: The city of residence is usually listed after the street address. Do not include the state, unless it is not Indiana.
