From Preface to Wesley's Notes on
The New Testament:
I once designed to write down barely
what occured to my own mind con-
sulting none but the inspired writers.
But no sooner was I acquainted with
that great light of the Christian world
(lately gone to his reward - Nov 2", 1751-83)
Bengelius, than I entirely changed my
mind being thoroughly convinced it
might be of more service to the cause
of religion were I barely to translate his
[Gnomon?] Novi Testamenti, than to write
many volumes upon it. Many of his
excellent notes I have therefore translated.
Many more I hae abridged, omitting
that part which was purely critical &
giving the substance of the rest.
Wesley refers to Bengel as "that great light
of the Christian World'

p 155 in article by A.J. Pierson
Dr Pierson gives the following as
examples: sin, sacrifice, atonement,
redemption, propitiation, reconciliation,
righteousness, repentence, conversion
faith, justification, assurance,
sanctification, life, forgiveness, glory
reward, punishment, world, church,
kingdom, sonship, adoption.
