Date Nut Loaf

3 cups sifted flour; 3 tsp
double acting baking
powder; ¾ tsp salt; ½ cup
brown sugar firmly
packed; ½ cup chopped
walnut meats; 1 cup finely
cut dates; 1 egg well beaten;
1 cup milk; 4 tbsp melted
butter.
Method: sift flour once,
measure, add baking
powder and salt and
sift again, add sugar
and mix well, add
nuts and the dates, combine
egg, milk and shortening,
add to the flour mixture
and blend. Bake in loaf
pan 8x8x3 in. in a moderate
oven 350°F one hour or
until done.

Variations: Orange Currant Loaf:
Substitute 1½ cups currants
for nuts and dates, and
2 tsp. grated orange rind
added to the fruit and
sugar mixture
