here from San Francisco shall have arrived at this
point & taken up their of line march for the Country
of the hostiles up the Colorado. I should remain
to prevent the Cuchanos Digenos & other tribes who
inhabit & who reside in the vicinity of the Colorado and
who at the present time manifest a good deal of
[illegible] quiet as far as possible.
I am fearful that the amount of goods
is too small for a general distribution as contemplated
by your instructions to me & will give rise to a
good deal of dissatisfaction amongst them for taken
the published statement of Special Agent Bailey
to the Secretary of the Interior. The Maricopas
number 4635 Souls, & the Pimas 1500 warriors &
allowing five souls to each warrior, which will be
admitted as a low estimate by every one conversant
with indians, 7,500 making a total of 11,835 Souls
amongst whom to issue about $400 worth of goods
Paper marked B is an inventory of the goods from which
you can form an idea of what amount each will
receive.
Very respectfully
Your Obdt Servant
H P Heintzelman
U.S. Agent
